Verlin Allen:
Born in Firth Idaho, Verlin moved with his family to Driggs,
Idaho. He grew up in the Teton Valley, graduating from
high school in Driggs. Verlin attended Pharmacy College at
Idaho State University in Pocatello Idaho. Then worked
in Salt Lake City where he met and married Verna Little in the
Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple.
Verlin arrived in Malad in December 1947 to manage 'R.V.
Daniel's Drug Store. A few years later he purchased the
store from R.V. and Grace Daniels, changing the name to 'Allen
Drug'. His brother Ken worked with Verlin for a few
years, then Ken moved to his store in Jackson Wyoming.
For over 44 years Verlin was active as store owner and
pharmacist. Verlin enjoyed meeting all the people who
came into the store. He was always helpful and
friendly, but what folks liked most about Verlin was his
genuine interest in his customers. He always wanted to
catch up on what is happening to his customers. Verlin
always seemed to ask a lot of questions.
After an earthquake in 1974, due to damage to the old brick
building, we rebuilt the store to 3 times its original size
(wider and longer). This resulted in a more complete
line of merchandise to sell along with the prescription
medications.
Verlin says "Verna & I left for a L.D.S. mission
to Arkansas and found that we really enjoy Malad as a place to
settle down and spend our retirement. Our 5 children, 22
grandchildren and 6 great grand children visit often.
It's been a good life".
